Minecraft Pi edition

We’ve been itching to try out Minecraft Pi edition since we got our Pi and I’ve blogged about this before – https://iammikek.wordpress.com/?s=Minecraft.

The official link was pulled due to the buggy nature of the alpha but fortunately I stumbled across a drop boxed version via Martin O’Hanlon at stuffaboutcode.com http://www.stuffaboutcode.com/2013/01/raspberry-pi-install-minecraft-leaked.html?m=1

Being able to program this version is something that appeals to us (37 me and 7 year old Ern) and the demo we’ve seen so far was pretty inspiring.

Martin has a good demo of the API at http://www.stuffaboutcode.com/2013/01/raspberry-pi-minecraft-api-basics.html?m=1

The idea of being able to drop blocks into play is quite fascinating. We’ve yet to interacting via python but look forward to programming some structures.

One added bonus of Minecraft Pi Edition is as its a port of Minecraft Pocket Edition they play nicely together. We managed to create games on both Pi and IPad and join the game with the other device. I can’t wait for the mayhem we can make when we are playing 3 player with scripting too.

We’ve yet to master the key controls for Pi Edition due to our Mac oriented keyboard and single button mouse. The minecraft wiki explains the combinations and what key does what http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Controls

I’m on the hunt now for a 3 button mouse to make the most of this version
